Research Paper Self-Evaluation

1. Discuss at least three interesting facts or ideas that you learned about your topic through your research.

Through my research on the history of photography and editing software influences, first off, I found very interesting facts about the evolution of the camera. I was so intrigued through the process of the first photograph ever, which was through a camera obscura; in other words, it was a camera box that utilized a process called heliography. Heliography is subsequent to “dissolving the unexposed parts” of the photograph “in oil of turpentine and rinsing the plate,” an illustration of the light drawing was produced with shadows that were exposed through the “bare pewter plate.” All of the work behind producing one photograph is so amazing to think about, especially with how advanced technology has come to today; even so, with just one push of a button, boom, you instantly get photographs digitally saved onto a memory chip that contains all of the images you have taken. Secondly, I also found the process of The Negative to Positive Process very interesting; in fact, it was an enormous progression in photography processing. The originator of the primary negative was Henry Fox Talbot, an English botanist and mathematician as well as a modern of Daguerre Talbot’s process of Negative to Positive, Talbot “sensitized paper to light with a silver salt solution. He then exposed the paper to light. The background became black, and the subject was rendered in gradations of grey.” This was a negative representation, and from the “negative,” Talbot completed contact prints, reversing the light and shadows to create a detailed picture. It is insane to think about how complex the process of obtaining a photograph was through out the evolution before the digital camera. Lastly, I found the development of digital editing software very fascinating. In just twenty short years, the software program “Photoshop,” has changed the photography world. Now with Photoshop, editing has become a lot faster, more efficient, and a revolution in the world of photography.

2. What was the biggest problem related to researching your paper that you had to solve?  Describe how you solved it.

In the beginning of my research, I was leaning towards researching on how Photoshop has affected the photography world, but every resource I found was repetitive and did not have a variety of things I could write about. That is when I had a spark in my mind to combine my idea about Photoshop, with the history of photography.  And that is how I came to research about “The History of Photography and Editing Software Influences.”

3. If you were to write your paper over, what would you change?  Why?

If I were to write my paper over, I would probably stick to just the history of photography. It would have been a lot simpler and a lot easier to understand a specific important piece in photography history.  It would have been a lot easier to develop and build upon historical facts that I researched.

4. Who or what helped you the most when you were writing your paper?  How?

I believe what helped me the most when writing my paper was that I created an outline before writing my paper. My outline helped me during my research because it facilitated the research process by allowing me to know what exactly to research about for each paragraph in my paper. Also my interview with photographer Corey Fox helped me talk about what a photography business is like today, and tie it into how photography has evolved into a business in our world today.

5. What was the biggest challenge related to writing your paper that you encountered?  How did you overcome it?

Since my paper was focused on the history of photography, I had trouble paraphrasing and weaving it into my paper; but I overcame this by embedding quotes, and then developing my own thoughts on each historical fact.

6. What are you most proud of regarding your research or your paper?

What I am most proud of my paper is that I was able to learn so many historical facts and gain a lot of knowledge on such an important technological advancement in our life’s today. I feel like the history of photography should be taught in school because it has many elements that can be taught such as: the science behind photography, influences in history such as the media, world wars, and documentation of important historical information through photographical development.
